21 Delicious Cholesterol-Friendly Burger Recipes

There’s no need to avoid burgers altogether if you’re following a low cholesterol diet. In fact, some burger recipes can actually help to lower cholesterol if they contain ingredients like beans or chickpeas.

The key to healthy burgers is to use lean meats, like chicken, turkey, fish and extra lean beef mince, or plant-based ingredients, like beans and quinoa. It’s also important to avoid high fat toppings, like cheese, and use these┬ácholesterol-friendly toppings instead:-

  • Gherkin slices
  • Houmous *
  • Mashed avocado *
  • Mustard
  • Piccalilli
  • Tomato ketchup
  • Tomato salsa

* These are particularly good, because chickpeas and avocados are great for lowering cholesterol.

I also recommend sticking to cholesterol-lowering accompaniments, like these:-

  • Wholemeal/wholegrain burger buns
  • Sweet potato wedges
  • Baked beans
  • Bean salad with toasted seeds

3. Beef Burgers

People often avoid beef when lowering their cholesterol, but I eat extra lean beef mince once or twice a week and have kept my cholesterol low.

Extra lean beef mince contains 2.4g of saturated fat per 100g, which is higher than the recommended ‘<1.5g saturated fat per 100g’ for a low cholesterol diet, so I make sure that I stick to low fat foods for the rest of the day to balance it out.

4. Fish Burgers

Oily fish, like salmon and fresh tuna, contains healthy fats that can help to raise ‘good’ cholesterol levels (HDL). White fish, like cod, doesn’t contain the same healthy fats, but is still good for a low cholesterol diet because it’s very low in saturated fat.
