If you love bread then you’ll be pleased to hear that most types of bread are cholesterol-friendly, so are great for a low cholesterol diet. More than that, many types of bread actively lower cholesterol because they’re rich in dietary fibre.
The two main things I look out for when choosing cholesterol-friendly bread are:-
- It should be low in saturated fat (i.e. contain less than 1.5g per 100g).
- It should also be high in fibre (i.e. contain more than 6g per 100g), but the more fibre the better.
I also look out for the salt and sugar content to make sure they’re not too high (note, many shop-bought loaves contain added sugar).

Wholemeal (wholegrain) bread is great for lowering cholesterol because it contains the whole of the grain, which includes the outer fibre-rich bran layer.
